Continuing the work of the progressive council.

If elected, I will join with the other progressive councilmembers to continue passing meaningful laws to protect our environment.  Enacting new environmental protection laws in Maui County is imperative to preserve the island's natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. Maui's unique ecosystems, from its vibrant coral reefs to lush rainforests, are not only vital to the environment but also to the economy, tourism, and the well-being of residents.

Climate change, pollution, and overdevelopment threaten these delicate ecosystems. Introducing stricter regulations on land use and coastal development can help protect habitats and mitigate erosion and deforestation. Enforcing sustainable fishing practices and protecting marine areas are crucial to preserving the rich marine life that draws tourists and sustains local fisheries.

Additionally, comprehensive waste management policies, including reducing single-use plastics and improving recycling programs, can significantly cut down on pollution. This will reduce the harmful impact on wildlife and maintain the cleanliness of our beaches and waterways. Implementing renewable energy standards and encouraging green building practices will also reduce Maui’s carbon footprint and promote sustainable growth.

Community involvement is essential. Education and incentive programs can help local businesses and residents adopt eco-friendly practices, fostering a collective responsibility towards environmental stewardship.

By enacting robust environmental protection laws, Maui County can safeguard its natural assets for future generations, ensuring that its environment remains a source of beauty, sustenance, and pride. These initiatives not only preserve the ecological integrity but also enhance the quality of life, bolster the economy, and maintain the cultural identity that makes Maui a cherished place.
